Dear reader, The collection of texts that follows does not claim to be the final word on the relationship between Jacques Chirac (1932-2019) and China. We hope that others, both in France and in China, will further discuss and study how the former French president influenced relations between the two countries. While the relationship between French grandeur and Chinese centrality can be traced back to Charles de Gaulle's (1890–1970) recognition of the People's Republic of China in 1964, it is just as much rooted in Jacques Chirac's appreciation for the contributions of Chinese civilization to humankind.
